Private loan safety — avoid scams and sign smart

A private loan is fast and flexible, but it carries risks for both sides. The biggest one isn't the loan itself — it's scammers. Here are the common traps and how to make the agreement safely.

Scams — how to spot them

The one rule: an honest lender never asks for money up front. If you are asked for a "handling fee", "security deposit" or "first instalment" before you have received the loan, it's a scam.

On Vertaislaina24 the listing is paid by card in your own name — a light filter, because a scammer won't pay under their name. We still guarantee no one: always assess the other party yourself.

Agreement pitfalls

A ready template is here: loan agreement terms.

Protect your personal data

Never publish your personal identity code, account number or bank credentials in a listing. On Vertaislaina24 your contacts can be hidden by default — the other party sends a contact request, and you decide who to open them to. Share sensitive details only once you're convinced the other party is trustworthy.

A safe process, step by step

  1. Post an "I need a loan" listing and describe your situation honestly — purpose, amount, how you repay.
  2. Talk with the other party, ask clarifying questions. Beware of hurry and advance-fee demands.
  3. Make a written promissory note: parties, principal, interest, schedule, default interest, any collateral/guarantee, date and signatures.
  4. Move the money traceably (bank transfer), not cash or gift cards.
  5. Keep the promissory note and payment receipts for the whole loan period.

Frequently asked questions

Does an honest lender ask for an advance fee?

Never. If a "lender" asks for a handling fee, a security deposit or a "first instalment" before you have received the money, it is almost certainly a scam. Money moves from lender to borrower first — not the other way round.

Why does paying for the listing reduce scams?

On Vertaislaina24 the listing is paid by card in your own name (Stripe verification). A scammer would rather not pay by card under their name, so the fee works as a light filter. We still guarantee no one — always assess the other party yourself.

Is an oral loan agreement safe?

No. An oral agreement is valid but almost impossible to prove in a dispute. Always make a written promissory note with the parties, amount, interest, repayment and date.

What if I suspect a scam?

Do not pay anything in advance and do not send your personal identity code or bank credentials. Cut contact, and you can report a suspicious listing to us. Suspected fraud can be reported to the police.

Post a listing safely

Your contacts stay private, and the payment filters scammers. Describe your situation honestly — you decide who you continue with.
